The study revealed inconclusive results. It was not the lack of communication that made the study inconclusive, but the sheer volume and intricacy of the communication. Without a doubt, there is a communication between large felines and humans; however, the communication is so elaborate that the power of the methodology to characterize it is inadequate. The stereotypical view of "human" and "animal" do not apply. Instead, the level of communication is better characterized as the awkward exchange between cultures that are just making each other's acquaintance. Communication was observed in a large number of ways. Tangible forms of communication (ie: touch, vocalization, body language) were commonplace between exotics and humans. Exchanges of this nature are specialized in some cases such that the exotics were observed to use different communication techniques depending on whether they were communicating with a human or with another cat. The communication did not stop at the tangible. Some exchanges occurred on a level beyond that of commonplace perception. It became clear that certain cats were more adept at this type of communication than others. They would exhibit an unusual level of adherence to complicated requests outside of what was physically articulated. The frequency with which these events occurred defied coincidence. Both compounds independently claimed to have experienced shared dreams with certain cats. There is a level of communication beyond that of conventional senses utilized by these cats that we not only have access to, but also have the ability to use. Further research will be required in order to develop better theories on the nature of this communication, though this will prove challenging due to its inherent intangibility. |
