TELLING TALES WITH TAILS

Telling stories with anthropomorphic animals is no longer just for kids, Mature audiences can enjoy as well

Orlando, FL -- Dec. 29, 2001 -- Anthropomorphic animals are often the material of children's books and Disney movies, but Simba Wiltz, author of the newly released novel MainFrame- Beginnings (Xlibris, $19.54, ISBN: 1-4010-2287-1), had very different intentions in the creation of his characters.

"It seems silly to me," Wiltz said, "that the complexities of these characters are relegated to children. Mature audiences ought to be able to enjoy them as well.  Anthropomorphized animals present an incredible opportunity for characterization."

His characters come from a variety of species, including some of his own design. The novel takes place on a planet called 'Pellicia', a planet entirely comprised of anthropomorphic animals.

"They have their own culture, their own traditions, their own problems, their own history, the list just goes on and on."

Wiltz has spent four years in creating this virtual world for his anthropomorphic characters, called 'fursons' in their world. In addition to a complex society, Pellicia has been given a complex set of problems.

"The established government is under attack from a very powerful terrorist organization intent on changing the status quo. But this is not a battle between David and Goliath. Instead, the two sides are more evenly matched, which makes for additional tension."

The subject matter involves extra tension since the September 11th attacks.

"This book was in the publication process prior to the 11th," Wiltz says, becoming serious, "when I found out about the attacks, I felt an inexpressible horror. I'd watched this kind of situation develop on Pellicia long before I expected it to happen in real life. What was once just an interesting story turned into something far more topical."

But Wiltz maintains that his novel is not meant to be a political commentary.  Instead, he wants to entertain first, despite the serious backdrop to the story.

"Sure, there are political issues that have to be dealt with, but my primary purpose was to explore how people react under extraordinary circumstances. The MainFrame team certainly has some extraordinary circumstances to deal with."
